Fullfil the following conditions:

  • Habilitation
  • Having proved one's worth in teaching and research
  • Formal requirement: Perennial work as "Privatdozent" (so-called probation period). The duration of the probation period differs from country to country and spans from 2 to 6 years.

Application procedure:

  • It is a title by corporate law. It is awarded by the university which is acting on a suggestion by the faculty.

  • Formale Voraussetzung: Mehrjährige Tätigkeit als "Privatdozent" (sogenannte Bewährungszeit). Die Dauer der Bewährungszeit ist je nach Bundesland unterschiedlich geregelt und reicht von 2 bis 6 Jahren.

  • Die außerplanmäßige Professur ist ein korporationsrechtlicher Titel. Er wird von der Universität - auf Vorschlag der Fakultät - verliehen.

    • Status: freelance, non-permanent
    • Betreffende Institutionen: Universities, Universities of Applied Sciences
    • Pflichten: Teaching ("Titellehre").
    • Rechte: 
      • Carrying the title "apl. Professor/in". Sometimes also "Professor/in".
      • Participation on the thesis committee.
    • Gehaltsgruppen: No remuneration because of "Titellehre". 
    • Evaluation: As the title "apl. Professor/in" is based by corporate law on the "Privatdozent/in", the professorship - and the right to carry the title "apl. Professor/in" - are terminated without further ado, if there are reasons for the venia legendi to expire.
    • Additionals: The position is, as mentioned above, first and foremost a title. However, with the title comes a teaching duty.
      • The position is neither an office according to public or civil service law nor an employment relationship. Already existing offices or employments are not affected by the title. Wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiter/innen are therefore still subject to directives.
      • Some universities grant the title also as a farewell gift to their former Juniorprofessor/inn/en if they don't have a future as full professors (i.e. there can be "Apl. Professor/inn/en" without Habilitation).
      • Especially in medicine, the apl.-Professorship facilitates the access to leading positions in hospitals.

    •  Rechte:
      • Führen des Titels "apl. Professor/in", manchmal auch "Professor/in".
      • Teilnahme an der Promotionskommission. 
    • Gehaltsgruppen: Kein Gehalt, da es sich um Titellehre handelt.
    • Evaluation: Da die außerplanmäßige Professur korporationsrechtlich auf der Privatdozentur aufbaut, fällt die Professur - und damit das Recht, den Titel "außerplanmäßiger Professor" zu führen - ohne weiteres fort, wenn Gründe vorliegen, die zum Erlöschen der venia legendi führen. 
    • Weiteres: Es handelt sich, wie oben beschrieben, hauptsächlich um einen Titel. Mit dem Titel kommt jedoch eine Pflicht zur Lehre.
      • Es handelt sich weder um ein dienstrechtliches Amt noch um ein Arbeitsverhältnis. Bereits bestehende Dienst- und Arbeitsverhältnisse werden durch die Verleihung der außerplanmäßigen Professur nicht berührt. Wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiter/innen bleiben daher auch als außerplanmäßige Professoren im Rahmen ihres Dienst- und Arbeitsverhältnisses weisungsgebunden.
      • Manche Universitäten geben ehemaligen Juniorprofessor/inn/en, die keine Aussichten auf eine volle Professur haben, den Titel als Abschiedsgeschenk mit.
      • Gerade in der Medizin erleichtert die außerplanmäßige Professur den Zugang zu leitenden Positionen in Kliniken.
