- Institutions concerned: Universities, Universities of Applied Sciences
- Duties: Teaching ("Titellehre"). Usually, two hours per week ("Semesterwochenstunden").
- Rights: Carrying the title of a "Privatdozent/in". Participation on the thesis committee.
- Grades: None.
- Salary range: No salary.
- Evaluation: There is a regular evaluation if the person in question still has the right to use the title "Privatdozent". This is not the case, if the Privatdozent/in does not fulfil his/her teaching obligations ("Titellehre") for a certain time (often: more than two semesters, definitely when more than 4 semesters).
- Additionals:
- Privatdozent/inn/en can only get remunerated by fees. As German universities normally don't take fees, the majority of Privatdozent/inn/en teach for free.
- The state of Rhineland-Palatinate has decided to abolish the title of a "Privatdozent/in". The title "Dr. habil." is still valid.

- Das Bundesland Rheinland-Pfalz hat sich vor einiger Zeit dazu entschieden, die Bezeichnung "Privatdozent/in" zu streichen. Die Bezeichnung "Dr. habil." ist weiterhin möglich.
