- A principal lecturer contributes to scholarship, teaching, research. He/she is committed to undertaking research, to enhancing teaching and building reputation. He is a team leader with line management responsibilities.
- "Role holders at this level are likely to be responsible for a balance of planning, designing and delivering major educational programmes, leading teaching or research teams, coordinating departmental administrative activities and enterprise activities" (Eurydice, European Commission).
