Applicants to a reader position should hold:

  • a relevant doctoral level research degree. 
  • an established and internationally recognised research profile, with a track record of publication in leading peer-reviewed journals
  • a well-developed future research agenda with of a clear publication plan for submission to future Research Excellence Framework (REF) programmes,
  • a record of success in generating external research income.

The title may be awarded as a mark of personal distinction to a senior member of staff who has made a distinguished contribution to the advancement of their discipline, by way of original research and/or innovative application.

Description
  • Status: The title of Reader is an academic rank above senior lecturer (or other equivalent senior position) and below Professor.  It is also sometimes considered as a Professor without a Chair. 
  • Duties: teaching on undergraduate and postgraduate programmes as applicable and support workforce development, through the recruitment and supervision of doctoral students and other academic training activities. A reader has a key role in the Department.
  • Grades: Grade 9
  • Salary range: from £50,00 to £61,000, negotiable within the grade 9 salary scale based on achievements and experience.
