Promotion
(doctorate) Lat. promovere = move forward.
The highest academic degree in Germany. It varies according to the discipline. The academic field is indicated by additions to the degree title, for example "Dr. phil." (mainly in the humanities and social sciences) or "Dr. rer. nat." (in the natural sciences).
Requirements:
Obtaining a doctorate degree ("Doktorgrad") after another advanced degree such as a Master's by completing a dissertation ("Dissertation") and an oral examination ("Disputation"). The dissertation also has to be published in order to obtain the title.
Two ways:
- Individual doctorate (followed by over three quarters of all doctoral students in Germany) and
- structured PhD programmes.
"Quality":
- The doctoral degree is marked.
- The formulation "quality of a doctorate" ("Qualitätspromotion") which is found in applications for professorships, refers only to the best grades.
- summa cum laude: outstanding work
- magna cum laude: very praiseworthy work

Der Doktorgrad ist der höchste akademische Grad in Deutschland. Er variiert je nach Disziplin. Das jeweilige akademische Feld wird durch Zusätze zum Titel angegeben, zum Beispiel "Dr. phil." (hauptsächlich in den Geistes- und Sozialwissenschaften) oder "Dr. rer. nat." (in den Naturwissenschaften).
Voraussetzungen:
Einen Doktorgrad kann man - nach einem fortgeschrittenem Grad wie dem Master - nur durch die Beendigung einer Dissertation und einer mündlichen Prüfung (Disputation) erhalten. Die Dissertation muss zudem veröffentlicht werden, damit der Title getragen werden darf.
Zwei Wege zur Promotion:
- Individuelle Promotion (mehr als drei Viertel aller Doktorand/inn/en in Deutschland folgen diesem Weg) und
- strukturierte Promotionsprogramme.
"Qualitätspromotion":
- Die Doktorgrad wird benotet.
- Die Formulierung von der "Qualität der Promotion" ("Qualitätspromotion"), die in Stellenausschreibungen für Professuren zu finden ist, bezieht sich nur auf die zwei besten Noten.
- summa cum laude: ausgezeichnet
- magna cum laude: sehr gut
